Chain, cordless, or motor?

Five ways to move a shade, from the dependable bead chain to a motor your home can talk to. Here's the honest fit for each — and when motorization stops being a luxury and starts being the practical answer.

The five controls

Bead-chain clutch

The classic loop of chain at one side. Nothing to charge, nothing to pair, precise positioning, and the lowest cost — it's the default for a reason. Choose your control side when you order. For homes with young children, keep the loop secured with a tension device, or go cordless.

Cordless spring

Pull the hem bar to set the height; a spring holds it there. No loop at all — the tidiest look and the child-safe pick for kids' rooms. Best on windows you can comfortably reach.

Rechargeable motor + remote

A battery motor inside the tube, driven by a handheld remote. No wiring, no ladder, quiet operation — the straightforward way to motorize an existing room. Recharge cadence depends on use; a few times a year is typical for a daily-cycled shade.

Rechargeable smart motor

The same battery convenience, plus an app and Matter support — so shades join scenes and schedules with the rest of your smart home ("all shades down at sunset") and respond to voice assistants.

Hard-wired motor

Powered from the wall: no charging, ever, and rock-solid for large or high shades that cycle constantly. Wants a power run to the window — easiest during construction or a remodel, worth an electrician's hour otherwise.

When motorization is the practical answer

Skip the "luxury" framing — motors earn their keep in specific situations:

Unreachable glass

Clerestories, stairwells, behind sofas or sinks: if operating a shade needs a ladder or a lean, it won't get operated. A remote fixes that permanently.

Big or many

Wide shades (we cut up to 118″) move heavy; a wall of six windows is a chore by hand. One button, all of them, evenly.

Schedules that matter

West glass that should shade itself at 3pm, bedroom shades that rise with the alarm — a smart motor plus a schedule does the remembering.

Pairing notes

Any control works with any fabric and either mount. Two combinations worth knowing: blackout + motor is the media-room favorite (dark on one button), and cassette or fascia + motor hides all the hardware for the cleanest possible window — see the fascia options in the configurator.
